People like Michael Moore sing the praises of socialized medical care. In his documentary Sicko, Moore extolled the virtues of the British National Health Service. Since I come from Britain, I know the reality of socialized medicine. It’s not as awesome as Michael Moore would have Americans believe. The waiting lists for surgery are outrageous and the service is often below par. There are also infections such as MRSA to worry about. Many people opt for private procedures, but they are expensive. If it’s cosmetic surgery you want, forget about the NHS. Unless you can prove that your big nose is causing manic depression, you’re out of luck. Consequently, many British people are now having cosmetic surgery abroad. The results of a recent survey for a site called treatmentabroad.com found that the chief objective for British people having cosmetic surgery abroad was to save money. People also wanted to avoid NHS waiting lists. Fear of infection was another factor. Nine out of ten people who opted for cosmetic surgery abroad were women. More than half of these women were aged between 40 and 69.The most popular destination for British people having cosmetic surgery abroad is Cyprus. If the NHS is so fantastic, why aren’t British people putting their trust in it?
